Collegeboard.org

  • Profile > My SAT

    • Test prep

    • Test scores

      • Here you can see your past scores from SAT’s, register for another SAT, and send current/pending scores to colleges.

  • Home > College Search/Planning

    • Choose to apply/think about/know colleges you are going to attend.

      • Here you can search for colleges based on various criteria, such as: campus, majors, school type, location, etc.

  • Home > Scholarship Search

    • Find scholarships

      • Scholarships are a good way to get funds for college, along with other financial aid programs. If you qualify for a scholarship, there’s no harm in applying.

KhanAcademy.org

    • Helps with many subjects, including Math and English related problems

      • Khan Academy has partnered up with College Board to create free SAT Test prep.  Based upon your PSAT scores or a diagnostic test you can take, Khan's SAT prep program will give you personalized practice for areas that need improvement.  There are also 8 practice SAT tests you can take.

Naviance

      • Here your test scores are displayed, including scores for individual parts. Scores from SATs, PSATs, ACTs, etc.

  • Colleges Tab

      • Here, you can find colleges based on various criteria, such as: Religious affiliation, co-ed vs. single-sex, public vs. private, two year vs four year, etc.

      • Here, you can also find scholarships that match you, or that you are eligible for. There is also a list of scholarships, along with national scholarships.

  • About Me > Resume

    • Update with academic achievements, extracurricular activities, etc.

      • Colleges will want to see what you are doing in schools. This is one of the first things they look at when reviewing your application. Include things like job experience, academic achievements, extracurricular activities, etc.

  • Application deadlines

    • Meet your deadlines!

      • Colleges may only take applications before their deadline. Other colleges may have “Rolling” admissions; this phrase means that there is no deadline, and you can apply whenever you want, although there is a certain time period when they would want applications (counselors would know more about this information.)

School Counselors

  • Can help with most college related issues/inquiries

    • College requirements

    • Help with applying/preparing for applying

      • Any college related issues should be brought up with your counselors; they should be able to answer any questions you have unless it’s about a specific college. Don’t be afraid to ask!

College Requirements

  • College essay

    • 250-650 words, 650 being the limit, not the goal.

  • SAT scores

    • Depends on the college

    • Preferably over 1000

      • Different colleges will usually want those students who have a certain SAT score.  Although these scores are a big factor, GPA is very important too

  • Teacher recommendations

    • At least 2 are needed

    • Give 2 weeks minimum time to your teachers to write them - they have a lot to do!

      • You want to have at least two teacher recommendations that are sent to colleges that you’re applying to. As the name suggests, these teachers will recommend you for admission for said colleges, and describe you in a positive light.

      • Be sure to ask teachers who know you the most and can write about you in the best possible way!

  • Senior personal reflection

    • Part of graduation requirement

    • Allows counselor to write a recommendation for you

  • Senior Transcript Request Form

    • Must be filled out 10 days prior to your application deadline.

Financial Aid

  • The best source of financial aid is the school or college you’re considering. They will usually have their own plan for financial aid.  Be sure to check out the specific colleges' websites.
