Pink Out Day
On Friday, October 6, 2017, the students of NHS joined together to support a common cause by all wearing pink. In addition to drawing awareness to worldwide efforts to promote cancer research, Pink Out Day hit home to some of our very own students. Alexa Wrobel, a senior at Newington High School, lost her mother to a long battle with cancer. She was very supportive in sharing her personal experience with Breast Cancer to help people who have not personally experienced this situation, understanding the pain that this brings to loved ones and the affected person.
“On Pink Out Day, it was a surprise [to me] to see so many people wearing pink,” Wrobel commented. “Pink out day is very important to me because of my mom. Having breast cancer isn’t easy and I experienced it through my mom. Watching her with chemo appointments and seeing how weak she was, it hurt me, but my mom taught me to never give up. I miss her; it’s true, but I am who I am today because of her! Cancer is something not to mess around with, and I hope everyone knows that. My mom’s passing was hard, but it made my family strong and I know my mom put up the good fight! I support anyone who has cancer; it’s a terrible disease that needs to be conquered!”
The student body not only displayed their support through wearing pink; they additionally donated to the Heavenly Hats Foundation. This foundation was established to send brand new hats to patients who have lost their hair due to cancer or other diseases. Each student paid as little as one dollar to receive a pin, allowing them to wear a hat on pink out day. The student body raised and donated over $800 to their foundation. In return, as a reward, two faculty members volunteered to get their heads shaved at our annual pep-rally.
It was amazing to see so many students come together to support something that is unfortunately so common to this day. Thank you to all who contributed and continue to contribute as much as they can.
